Bicycle Road Safety

Posted in Firm News,Personal Injury on January 5, 2017

Cycling on any road can be dangerous, especially when its on a busy street. Cars squeeze by you at 40 miles per hour and they’re not always looking out for the biker. These safety tips will help you stay safe biking on any road, and can help prevent a car, truck, motorcycle accident and more.

Rules of safe road cycling

Many cyclers aren’t aware of all the bicycle traffic laws. Below are the rules of the road that will keep you safe when riding.

  • Bike on the road in the same direction as traffic
Only bikers under age 12 are legally allowed to ride on sidewalks. Even though they lack a motor, bicycles are considered road vehicles just like cars and trucks.
  • Stop at red lights and stop signs, and obey other traffic signs.
  • Use marked bike paths or lanes when they’re available.
  • When traveling with children, be extra safe. Kids must sit in a correctly attached child carrier and all children must wear a helmet at all times — in some states that means all persons under age 18.
  • Don’t bike on highways, expressways, interstate routes or thruways
  • Cycling safety gear

Make sure you have this gear before going out on a ride:

  • Helmet
  • Bell or horn
  • White headlight and red taillight when riding around sunrise, sunset, or at night
  • Working brakes
  • Reflectors on the front and back of the bicycle

The best way to avoid bicycle accidents

  • Don’t use your phone
  • Ride in a straight line
  • Stay on the right side of the lane
  • Stay out of drivers’ blind spots
  • Use your signals
  • Stay visible
  • Bring a tool kit in case your bike breaks down
  • Consider using a mirror to see behind you
